The story behind Gosling´s Black Seal began back in the spring of 1806. James Gosling, a wine and spirits merchant, set sail from England for the USA aboard the ship Mercury. After ninety-one days at sea, they put in at the nearest port, St. George’s, Bermuda, but instead of sailing on, James opened a shop on King’s Parade.
Until the First World War, all rum was sold straight from the cask. It was bottled in reused bottles and sealed with a black seal. People soon began calling the rum “Black Seal”.
Today, Gosling´s Rum is Bermuda’s biggest export. It is synonymous with Bermuda itself, and not least with the national drink, the Dark ´n´ Stormy.
